Welcome!
"Give me better mothers and I i will
give you a better world."
—Aldous Huxley
San Antonio Birth Doulas (SABD) was founded in 1999 by two certified doulas in response to the increasing need for doula services among pregnant teens and low-income women. A “doula” is a woman educated and trained in childbirth whose role is to provide prenatal and childbirth education and to prepare women for the challenges of pregnancy, labor, and birth. Doulas provide non-medical physical and emotional support to women and their families during the labor and birth process, with continued contact for up to six months postpartum.
The mission of SABD is to provide new and expecting parents with support in the areas of pregnancy, labor, breastfeeding, newborn care and bonding in an effort to prevent infant/child abuse and neglect. An emphasis is placed on reaching pregnant teens and low-income families through mentoring, education and labor support.
By continuously creating and developing partnerships with social workers, hospitals, doctors, nurses, midwives, judges, schools, the juvenile probation department, and social services agencies, SABD promotes its services and maximizes community resources by doing outreach to the target population.
In July 2005, SABD merged with Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of San Antonio, Inc., but continues to operate as a separate nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.
We believe that there is a doula movement afoot! Doulas are being recognized as providing excellent care to laboring mothers to help relieve pain and fear, reduce interventions, including cesareans, create healthy mother/baby outcomes, and keep health care costs down.
You are about to become a mommy. Could you use a little mothering?
We can still assist mothers who do not fall within the guidelines to receive free services as SABD clients. We provide families with referrals to trained and skilled doulas that can assist them as they make their journey into parenthood.
